As a student, I have always enjoyed learning new things through different methods. From reading old fashion textbooks to watching modern Youtube videos, these powerful education tools are a great way on enhancing your learning experience (as long as you know where to look). One of the funner/relaxing way to end off a long day at school is to read fun facts! Fun facts are great because they allow you to discover new interesting ideas (which you can annoy your friends with) while having fun! So enjoy!

Endoscope Swallower
An endoscope is an instrument used to examine internal organs and cavities. It was first created in 1868 by German doctor Adolph Kussmaul to view the inside of a stomach. However, unlike the modern day endoscopes, the prototype was not flexible, so the doctor enlisted the help of a sword swallower who easily gulp down the 18.5 inch by 0.5 inch instrument that Kussmaul designed.
Stomach Rumbling: Not Hunger
Borborygmi, or stomach rumbling, are not the direct result of hunger. In fact, they can happen anytime, anywhere. The rumbling is caused by peristalsis in your stomach or small intestines that happen due to food, fluids, and gases passing through your gastrointestinal tract. However, borborygmi are louder in an empty stomach because there are nothing to muffle the sounds. Nevertheless, when there is no food in your stomach, your brain will send signals to commence peristalsis in order to ensure no excess food was left in the stomach, thus resulting in the need for food.
Disney for Bacteria
Although you are not born with any bacteria in your gastrointestinal system, you will quickly develop a large population within the first month. The population size can reach up to 500 species of bacteria as you reach adulthood. Many of these bacteria play a huge role in healthy digestion and has even sparked new products containing probiotics, meaning "friendly bacteria". These bacteria fight disease-carrying organism, help absorb nutrients, and support the immune system. |

Brain of Its Own
The majority of the functions in the digestive system are controlled by the enteric nervous system (ENS) which is made up of many nerve cells and is regulated by the same neurotransmitters (notably serotonin) found in the brain. This resemblance has earned the ENS the nickname "Second Brain".The ENS has partially developed the body's "fight or flight" system and is also responsible for when your stomach flips out during a stressful/nervous experience.
